Welcome!

I am Lucas Baumgartner, a Ph.D. Student in Communication and Journalism, Data Scientist, and game dev for fun!

I am a Brazilian researcher in Communication. I am currently studying the interplay between the gaming environment and radicalism.

I’ve been working with data in the industry since 2015, always looking for ways to connect academic insights with real-world impact.

In my spare time, I’m also a hobbyist game developer — just for the fun of experimenting and creating.
Let’s talk research, data, or game design — or all three.

My Research

In my current research, I propose to study the influence of the gaming environment – i.e., online gaming, gaming forums, YouTube channels, Modder community, etc. – in the radicalization of young people. More specifically, I am to find out the links between the radicalization of young people and the consumption of far-right radical political information available in the gaming environment. This research is necessary not only because it tries to cover some gaps we found during the literature review but also because it faces a complex topic that is worrying several families, policymakers, and societies. We do so by applying mixed methods in multilevel research, aiming to create a map of political information consumption that may help society deal with the aforementioned problem better.

What I do

01

Qualitative Research

Quantitative research focuses on collecting and analyzing numerical data to identify patterns, correlations, and statistical relationships. It involves structured methodologies, surveys, experiments, and inferential tools to test hypotheses and derive empirical conclusions across social and market contexts.

02

Quantitative Research

Qualitative research explores non-numerical data—such as interviews, observations, and discourse—to uncover meanings, motivations, and subjective experiences. This approach is essential for interpreting human behavior, communication patterns, and cultural phenomena in depth.

03

Python Programming

Python is my primary language for data analysis, automation, and research. I develop scripts and applications for statistical modeling, data cleaning, web scraping, content automation, and AI integration—often leveraging libraries like Pandas, Scikit-learn, and LangChain.

04

Data Analytics

I specialize in examining written, visual, and audio content to extract patterns, themes, and discourse structures. Using tools like IRaMuTeQ and other NLP frameworks, I analyze communication in social media, news, academic texts, and gaming communities.

05

Data Visualization

I transform complex data into clear, engaging visuals—charts, networks, timelines, or interactive dashboards. Data visualization helps stakeholders grasp insights quickly and supports strategic decisions in both academic and market contexts.

06

Teaching & Mentorship

With experience in academic environments and team training, I’m deeply committed to knowledge transfer. I’ve taught and mentored students, collaborators, and clients in research methods, data analysis, and communication strategy—balancing theoretical frameworks with hands-on, project-based learning.
